The SETI Institute's Community College Internship Program marks its fourth successful year, offering students a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on research. This year's cohort included three exceptional interns: Ariana Estrada, Valentina Penati-Baktyar, and Maria Pico. Their projects, presented at the final event on June 5, showcased the program's effectiveness in providing a platform for cutting-edge research. Ariana Estrada, remotely connected from Spain, focused on exoplanet detection using the Unistellar Citizen Science Program. Her Python tool, designed to match observed targets with scientific catalogs, streamlines the identification of exoplanet candidates, demonstrating the practical application of technology in astronomy.
Valentina Penati-Baktyar's research addressed the challenges of detecting water snow lines in protoplanetary disks using James Webb Space Telescope data and IRIS modeling. Despite data saturation issues, her project highlighted the complexities of contemporary astronomical research, underscoring the importance of perseverance and adaptability in scientific inquiry.
Maria Pico's work centered on exoplanet detection and vetting workflows, utilizing data from NASA's TESS spacecraft. Her development of a user-friendly website to filter and validate potential planet candidates showcases the power of technology in enhancing research efficiency. These projects not only contribute to scientific progress but also inspire students to explore the intersection of technology and astronomy.
The event concluded with a recognition ceremony, where Pamela Harman, the SETI Institute's outgoing Director of Education, presented certificates to the interns. Dr. Simon Steel, Deputy Director of the Carl Sagan Center and lead for the community college internship program, emphasized the program's impact, stating that it expands internship opportunities beyond traditional summer programming and fosters a collaborative relationship between the SETI Institute and Bay Area community colleges.
